Installing a Grab Bar in a Fiberglass or Acrylic Shower

A fiberglass or acrylic shower surround is a thin moulded shell with an air gap behind it. It carries no load at all. So installing a grab bar in one is not really a question about the bar; it is a question about what you can reach through the shell and fix to. There are three legitimate answers, one non-answer that people try, and one situation where the honest advice is to stop.

The target is unchanged whatever the wall is made of: the bar and its mounting together must resist 250 pounds of force in any direction. A fiberglass shell on its own resists almost nothing.

Numbers to keep in mind

  • Required resistance for a grab bar assembly: 250 pounds in any direction.
  • Typical fiberglass or acrylic surround shell thickness: about an eighth of an inch, sometimes with a fibre-reinforced backing.

Option one, and the best one: land on studs

If both flanges land on framing, the installation is as strong as a tiled installation and it is the simplest route.

The problem is finding the studs. An electronic stud finder is unreliable through a fiberglass shell with an air gap, because it is reading the shell rather than the wall behind it. Two better methods:

Use a strong magnet. Drywall behind the surround is screwed to the studs, and a rare earth magnet dragged slowly across the surface will find those screw heads if the gap is small. Mark every hit and look for a vertical line.

Measure from a known point. Corners, window openings and the edge of the surround are usually tied to framing. Measure from a corner in 16 inch steps and check with the magnet.

Once you have found studs, the bar length is dictated by them. A 36 inch bar needs two studs 32 inches apart, which does not exist on 16 inch centres, so a 36 inch bar with both flanges on studs is usually a 32 inch flange spacing landing on the second and fourth stud. Where the arithmetic does not work, a 16 inch bar spanning one stud pair often will. Buy the bar that fits the wall you have, not the bar you pictured.

Option two: add backing behind the shell

This is the strongest result and the most work. A piece of plywood, normally three quarter inch, is fixed across the studs behind the surround so the flange screws land in solid timber wherever you want them.

It is straightforward in one situation: when the surround is being replaced anyway, or when the wall behind is accessible from an adjoining room or a closet. In that case the backing goes in before the surround does, and you should plan grab bar positions at that moment even if nobody needs a bar yet. Blocking is cheap during a renovation and expensive afterwards.

If the shower is finished and there is no access from behind, this option means cutting the surround, which is a repair job with a visible result. It is rarely the right answer for one bar.

Option three: anchors rated for grab bars

There is a category of anchor engineered specifically for this, sold under names like solid-mount or toggle-style grab bar anchors. They work by spreading load across a wide area of the wall behind the shell rather than relying on the shell itself, and reputable ones are tested and published to well over 250 pounds.

Three conditions attach to using them.

They must be rated for grab bars specifically, with a published figure. A drywall anchor rated for a mirror is not the same product.

They must be installed exactly to their own instructions, including the hole size, which is usually specific and unforgiving.

There must be enough clearance behind the shell for the anchor to open. Measure the gap by drilling a small pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot and probing with a bent wire before you commit to the anchor.

The non-answer

Plastic conical wall plugs, self-drilling drywall anchors and the generic screws that come in the box are not grab bar fixings. They will hold the bar up. They will hold a hand resting on it. They will not hold a person falling onto it, which is the only load that matters, and they fail suddenly rather than gradually.

If the choice is between a grab bar in plastic plugs and no grab bar, choose no grab bar, because a bar that fails during a fall is worse than a wall. Then fix it properly.

Sealing, which everyone forgets

Every hole you make in a shower surround is a route for water into the wall cavity, and a wet cavity behind fiberglass is invisible until it is expensive.

Put a bead of 100 percent silicone sealant into each hole before the screw or anchor goes in, and a thin bead around the flange where it meets the shell. Do not use acrylic caulk here. Wipe the excess before it skins.

When to stop and call someone

Stop if you cannot find framing and cannot measure the cavity. Stop if the shell flexes noticeably when you press where the bar will go. Stop if the person who will use the bar has significant mobility loss, because the margin for error is smaller and a professional assessment of bar positions is worth more than the bar.
