Hang the bottom of a chandelier 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop on a standard 8 foot ceiling, and add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height above that. On a 10 foot ceiling that puts the fixture at 36 to 42 inches above the table.
The number is measured from the tabletop, not from the floor, and to the lowest point of the fixture, not to its centre. Both of those details are where people go wrong, and both produce a chandelier that is too low.
Numbers to keep in mind
- Standard 8 foot ceiling: 30 to 36 inches from tabletop to the bottom of the fixture.
- Add roughly 3 inches per foot of ceiling above 8 feet.
- Diameter guide: chandelier width in inches equals about half to two-thirds the table width.
- Room-based alternative: add the room length and width in feet and read the total in inches.
- Leave at least 6 inches of clear table on each side of the fixture, measured on the narrow dimension.
- Over open floor rather than a table, the rule changes entirely: 84 inches minimum from the floor.

Within each band, go to the lower number if the fixture is open and airy and you can see through it, and to the higher number if it is solid, wide or has opaque shades, because a solid fixture at 30 inches blocks the sightline across the table.
Test it from a chair, not from the doorway. Sit down at the table and look across at the person opposite. If the fixture cuts their face, it is too low, whatever the tape measure says.
Size, which matters more than height
A chandelier at the right height and the wrong size still looks wrong, and size is the harder judgement because the fixture always looks bigger in a box than it does on a ceiling.
Two methods, and they answer different questions.
Size to the table. Take the table's narrow dimension in inches and aim for a fixture between half and two-thirds of it. A 42 inch wide table suits a fixture 21 to 28 inches across. This is the method to use when the table is the fixed point, which it usually is.
Size to the room. Add the room's length and width in feet and read the result in inches. A 12 by 14 foot room suits about 26 inches. Use this when the fixture also has to light the room rather than just the table, or when the table might change.
Where the two disagree, follow the table. A chandelier that overhangs the table edge is the more visible mistake.
The three situations where the rule is wrong
A long rectangular table. A single round fixture sized to the width leaves the ends of a 96 inch table unlit and unbalanced. Either use a linear fixture sized to about half to two-thirds the table length, or use two round fixtures spaced along it. The linear chandelier guide covers the arithmetic.
A table that is not where the box is. Very common in older houses, where the outlet box sits at the room's centre and the table does not. Hanging the fixture over the box and the table off-centre is visible from every seat. The fixes are a swag hook to move the fixture over the table, a ceiling medallion and a relocated box, or moving the table. Do not accept a chandelier that is not centred on the table.
A sloped or vaulted ceiling. Measure the height at the point directly above the table centre, not at the ridge or the wall. Then check the fixture supports a sloped canopy, because not all do.
What the fixture does to the light on the table
Height changes more than proportion. It changes how the light lands, and that is the part people notice without being able to name it.
At 30 inches the light pool is tight and bright on the table and falls away quickly at the edges. That reads as intimate, and it is the right choice for a dining room used mostly in the evening. At 42 inches the same fixture throws a wider, flatter pool that lights the chairs and some of the floor, which suits a table that doubles as a work surface or a room used in daylight.
Bulb choice interacts with this. A clear lamp in an open fixture at 30 inches puts filament glare directly in a seated person's eyeline. Either move up the range, or use a frosted lamp, or choose a fixture with shades. Dimming solves a brightness problem but it does not solve a glare problem, because a dimmed clear filament is still a bright point in a dark room.
Getting the drop right on the day
Chain and rod fixtures both need their length set before the canopy goes up, and that is much easier to do at the table than on a ladder.
Calculate the total drop first: ceiling height, minus table height, minus the clearance you want, minus the height of the fixture body. What remains is chain or rod length. A 96 inch ceiling, a 30 inch table, 32 inches of clearance and an 18 inch tall fixture leaves 16 inches of chain.
Then hang a stand-in before you commit. A piece of card cut to the fixture's diameter, taped to a length of string at the calculated height, tells you in thirty seconds what a tape measure cannot.
