Kohler Towel Bars: The Families We Stock and the Sizes to Choose

Kohler K-13108-CP Pinstripe Towel Bar 18in in Polished Chrome

Kohler towel bars come in a small number of design families, most of them 18 or 24 inches long, and the choice between them is usually settled by two things: the length the wall can take, and whether the family is still in production. This guide covers the families in the PrimeZen catalogue, what each one looks like on a wall, and the two Kohler towel bar families we get asked for and cannot supply.

A towel bar is a horizontal rail on two wall-mounted posts. Kohler sells them as part of a design family so the bar, the ring, the hook and the paper holder share a profile. That family logic is the reason a mismatched replacement bar looks wrong even when the finish is right.

Numbers to keep in mind

  • PrimeZen carries 11 bath accessories, of which six are towel bars and one is a towel arm.
  • Bar lengths here are 18 inches and 24 inches.
  • Six Kohler families are represented: Loure, Pinstripe, Bellera, Maxton, Uniform, plus one unbadged decorative bar.
  • A folded bath towel needs roughly 24 inches of bar. A hand towel is comfortable on 18 inches.
  • Leave about 4 inches of clear wall beyond each post so the towel does not foul a door casing or a corner.

Pick the length before you pick the family

Length is the decision that cannot be undone later, because the two mounting posts are fixed at the bar's own spacing. If you buy 18 inches and then want 24, you are patching drywall.

The rule that works: a bath towel hung folded in half needs about 24 inches of rail before it starts bunching. A hand towel or a guest towel sits comfortably on 18. If the bar is going on a short wall between a door casing and a vanity, measure the clear space and subtract 8 inches, four at each end, before you decide which length fits.

Two bars at 18 inches almost always beat one at 24 in a shared bathroom, because two people can each have dry towel space. That is a use decision rather than a design one, and it is the one most often got wrong.

The families in this catalogue

Family Length Finish Character
Loure 18 in Polished chrome Square, architectural, flat-faced posts. Reads modern.
Pinstripe 18 in Polished chrome Fine linear detailing on the posts. The most decorative of the group.
Bellera Single bar Oil-rubbed bronze Softer, transitional profile. The only dark finish here.
Maxton 24 in Brushed nickel Plain round rail, wall-mount posts. The straightforward choice.
Uniform 24 in Brushed nickel Slim, minimal, low projection from the wall.
Decorative 18 in Brushed nickel Unbadged bar, traditional turned posts.
Kohler K-13108-CP Pinstripe 18 inch towel bar in polished chrome, wall mounted
Kohler K-13108-CP Pinstripe 18in Towel Bar in polished chrome. The most detailed profile of the six.

Finish, and the one place it matters more than you think

Three finishes are represented: polished chrome, brushed nickel and oil-rubbed bronze. Chrome is the easiest to match to an existing bathroom because it has been the default for decades and does not vary much between makers. Brushed nickel varies a great deal between makers, so if you are adding a bar to an existing set from another brand, hold the two side by side before committing rather than trusting a photograph.

Oil-rubbed bronze is the finish where matching matters most and photographs help least. It is a living finish on some products and a fixed coating on others, and two bronzes from different families can sit an obvious shade apart on the same wall. If the rest of the room is bronze, buy the bar from the same family as the rest of the set wherever that is still possible.

Mounting, briefly

A towel bar carries a wet bath towel, which is heavier than people expect, and it gets pulled downward and outward every time someone dries their hands. Two things follow. Anchor into a stud where a post lands on one, and use a proper hollow-wall anchor rated for the load where it does not. Toggle-style anchors hold; plastic conical plugs push out of drywall within a year.

Set the bar at about 48 inches from the finished floor to the centre of the rail in an adult bathroom. That number and its exceptions are covered properly in the towel bar height guide linked at the end.

What we carry

All of these sit in Bath Accessories, and the full catalogue is in All Kohler.

There is also a Kohler K-R26124-BN Uniform Towel Arm in brushed nickel, which is a single swing arm rather than a bar. It is the answer when there is no run of wall long enough for a bar at all, next to a pedestal sink or in a powder room.

What we do not carry, and where to look

Two Kohler families account for most of the towel bar requests we cannot fill: Purist and Devonshire. Neither is in this catalogue. If you are matching either one, check Kohler's own site first, since both families have had longer production lives than the lighting and parts may still be current. After that, Ferguson and Build.com carry Kohler bath accessories in depth, and an eBay saved search set against the exact model number is the tool that finds the genuinely retired pieces.

Search on the model number, not the family name. "Kohler Devonshire towel bar" returns a decade of listings in every length and finish. The exact model string off the back of your existing bar returns the one you actually need. If you cannot find that string, photograph the mounting post and the underside of the rail before you start searching, because that is where Kohler prints it.

Frequently asked questions

What length Kohler towel bar should I buy?

24 inches for bath towels, 18 inches for hand and guest towels. If the wall is short, measure the clear run and subtract about 8 inches to leave clearance at both ends.

Can I mix a Kohler towel bar with accessories from another family?

Within one finish, yes, provided the profiles are compatible. A square-profile Loure bar beside round Maxton posts reads as a mistake. Matching the finish and the profile shape matters more than matching the family name.

Are these towel bars new?

Yes. Everything in this catalogue is new stock in original Kohler packaging. Where a family is discontinued, that describes the supply position rather than the condition.

Do Kohler towel bars come with mounting hardware?

Kohler supplies the mounting posts and screws. It does not supply hollow-wall anchors sized for your particular wall, and the ones in the box are not always the right choice for drywall without a stud behind it. Buy anchors to suit the wall you have.
