A linear chandelier should be half to two-thirds the length of the table or island below it. An 8 foot table takes a fixture between 48 and 64 inches. A 6 foot island takes 36 to 48. Hang it at the same height as any other chandelier, 30 to 36 inches above the surface, and centre it on the surface rather than on the room.
A linear chandelier is a fixture whose lamps sit in a line on a long horizontal frame, rather than radiating from a central column. It exists for one reason: a round fixture over a long rectangular table lights the middle and leaves the ends dim and visually unanchored.

Take the lower end of the range when the table is narrow or the room is small, because a long fixture over a narrow table exaggerates the narrowness. Take the upper end when the table is wide and the ceiling is high.
The one hard limit is the 6 inches of clear surface at each end. A fixture that reaches nearly to the ends of the table looks as though it has been fitted to the room rather than chosen for it, and it removes the visual breathing space that makes a long table look generous.
When a linear fixture is the wrong answer
A round or square table. A linear fixture over a round table is the mismatch that no amount of correct sizing rescues. Round table, round fixture.
A short table. Under about 6 feet, a linear fixture starts to look like a strip light. The fixture needs enough length to read as a line rather than a bar.
A room where the table might move or change. A linear fixture is tightly coupled to one piece of furniture in one orientation. If the room is used flexibly, a round fixture is more forgiving.
Where the box is not on the table's long axis. A linear fixture visibly declares its own alignment, so an off-axis one is more obviously wrong than an off-centre round fixture. Check the box position before committing.
Two fixtures instead of one
Beyond about 10 feet, a single linear fixture becomes an unusual and expensive object. Two smaller round or linear fixtures, spaced along the table, are easier to source and often look better.
Space them as you would island pendants: set each in from its end of the table first, then check the gap between them looks deliberate. Two 30 inch fixtures on a 12 foot table, each centred over a half of the table, is a comfortable arrangement.
Light count and how the room actually reads
Linear fixtures come with anywhere from three to eight lamps along their length, and the count changes the effect as much as the length does.
A three-light fixture over 42 inches puts lamps roughly 14 inches apart, which reads as three distinct pools of light and a lot of visible frame. That is a graphic, architectural look and it suits a modern room.
An eight-light fixture puts lamps much closer together and reads as a continuous band. That is softer and more traditional in effect, even when the fixture itself is modern.
Neither is better. But if you are lighting a table where people read menus or do homework, more lamps at lower output gives more even light across the surface than fewer lamps at higher output.
Hanging a fixture that has to be level in two directions
A round chandelier only has to hang plumb. A linear fixture has to hang plumb, level along its length, and square to the table. Three things instead of one, and the last two are the ones that get missed.
Level along the length is a real risk on any fixture hung from two points, because the two rods or cables are rarely identical out of the box and a ceiling is rarely flat. Put a spirit level on the frame before you tighten anything, and adjust at the canopy rather than by bending the frame.
Square to the table matters more than people expect, because the eye reads a long fixture against the long edge of the table and picks up a couple of degrees of rotation immediately. Sight down the fixture from one end of the table with the table set as it will normally be used, and rotate the canopy until the two lines agree.
Both checks take a minute and both are much harder to correct once the ceiling has been made good around the canopy.
Finish, on a fixture that is mostly frame
A linear chandelier is largely visible structure, so the finish carries more weight than it does on a fixture that is mostly glass. Matte black reads as a drawn line against a light ceiling and is the most graphic option. Brass warms the whole fixture and softens the geometry. Matte black with brass trim gives you the line and the warmth together, which is why that combination appears repeatedly in this range.
