Three questions come up every time: how many pendants, how far apart, and how high. All three are answered from one measurement, the length of the island. Hang the bottom of each pendant 30 to 36 inches above the worktop, use two pendants up to about 7 feet of island and three beyond that, and space them evenly with the outer two set in from the ends.
Everything else in this guide is the reasoning behind those numbers and the cases where they bend.
Numbers to keep in mind
- Height: 30 to 36 inches from worktop to the bottom of the pendant.
- Count: two pendants for an island up to about 7 feet, three for 7 to 10 feet.
- Spacing between pendant centres: 24 to 30 inches for standard pendants, less for minis.
- Keep the outer pendants at least 6 inches in from each end of the island.
- Combined pendant width should be no more than about half the island length.

Two is the safer number in most kitchens. Three looks generous in a photograph and crowded in a real 7 foot island, particularly once a fruit bowl and a kettle are on the worktop. If you are between two and three, take two and go slightly larger on each.
Even numbers over an island are fine, incidentally. The old advice about odd numbers applies to groupings without a fixed axis. An island has a centreline, and two pendants placed symmetrically about it read as deliberate.
Spacing, and the arithmetic that makes it even
Do not space pendants by dividing the island into equal parts and putting a light in each. That leaves the outer pendants too close to the ends.
The method that works: decide how far in from each end the outer pendants sit, then divide the remaining distance equally.
An 8 foot island is 96 inches. Set the outer pendants 18 inches in from each end, which leaves 60 inches between them. With three pendants, the middle one goes at the centre and each gap is 30 inches. With two pendants, they sit 60 inches apart, which is wide, so pull them in to 24 inches from each end and 48 inches apart instead.
Mark the positions on the worktop with tape before anything is cut into the ceiling. Stand back, look from the doorway and from the far side of the room, and only then drill.
Height, and the one thing that overrides it
Thirty to 36 inches above the worktop is the range. Take the lower end for a small kitchen or a low ceiling, the upper end for a tall ceiling or a large fixture.
The override is sightline. An island usually has seating on one side and a cook on the other, and they look at each other across it. If the pendants are opaque and hung at 30 inches, they block that view. Two fixes: raise to 34 or 36, or choose a fixture you can see through. Clear glass and open frames buy you height.
The other override is a hood. If a range hood is on the island, the pendants have to clear it visually as well as physically, which usually means moving them further to the sides rather than raising them.
Size, and the mistake that shows in photographs
Add the widths of all the pendants together. That total should be no more than about half the island length, and comfortably less is fine.
Three 18 inch pendants total 54 inches, which on an 8 foot island is more than half. That combination is the single most common island lighting error, and it is why three-pendant kitchens usually want minis. Three 10 inch pendants total 30 inches, which sits comfortably.
Bulbs and glare, because an island is a work surface
An island is used for chopping, homework and paperwork, so it needs usable light rather than mood light. Two practical points.
Use the same colour temperature in the pendants as in the rest of the kitchen lighting. Pendants at 2700K over a room lit at 3500K look yellow and slightly wrong, and nobody identifies why.
Open-bottomed pendants over a reflective worktop bounce a bright disc back at the person sitting opposite. On polished stone, a frosted lamp or a partly enclosed shade is the difference between a nice fixture and one that gets switched off.
Wiring positions, and why to decide before the ceiling closes
Pendant positions are usually fixed by where the electrician put the boxes, and the electrician puts the boxes at first fix, months before anyone has chosen a fixture. That order is backwards and it is the reason so many islands end up with pendants in slightly wrong places.
If the ceiling is still open, do the arithmetic above using the island dimensions from the kitchen drawing and give the electrician exact positions. It costs nothing at that stage.
If the ceiling is closed and the boxes are wrong, the options are a track or rail that lets the fixtures slide, a canopy that carries several pendants from one box, or a swag arrangement. All three are visible compromises, and all three are better than three pendants that are not centred on the island.
