How to Match an Existing Kohler Finish

Kohler finishes are coded in the last segment of every model number, and matching a new piece to an installed one starts there, not with the finish name on a retail box. This guide lists the Kohler finish codes represented in our inventory and links each to the live collection of in-stock pieces.

  • Oil-Rubbed Bronze (2BZ, BZL): dark, hand-rubbed depth. Never mix makers; the rub pattern differs. Shop Oil-Rubbed Bronze
  • Polished Chrome (CP, CPL): the most installed bath finish, and unforgiving side by side. Shop Polished Chrome
  • Brushed / Vibrant Brushed Nickel (BN, BNL): Kohler's PVD Vibrant process has a warmer, tighter grain than generic brushed nickel. Shop Brushed Nickel
  • Polished Nickel (SN, SNL): warmer than chrome, shifts with room light. Shop Polished Nickel
  • Matte Black (BL, BLL, BML): BML pieces carry Brushed Brass accents; check the code. Shop Matte Black
  • Polished Brass (2PL) and Brushed Modern Brass (2GL): two different brass treatments; the code prevents the classic mix-up. Shop Brass
  • Gunmetal (GNL): short-run Parohn finish between black and nickel. Shop Gunmetal
  • Vibrant French Gold (AF): heritage luxury electroplate. Shop French Gold
  • Vibrant Polished Rose Gold (RGD): short-lived statement finish. Shop Rose Gold
  • Brushed Gold (BGL): the soft modern gold. Shop Brushed Gold
  • Matte White (WCL, WGL): Hauksbee's ceramic-feel white, some with chrome trim. Shop Matte White
  • Specialty colorways (Dune, Foussana Grey, Vibrant Stainless, Titanium): matched to specific Kohler programs. Shop Specialty Finishes

Three rules for a clean match

First, match the code, not the name: two makers' "brushed nickel" are different metals, but two Kohler BN pieces match. Second, confirm the design collection too, because post shapes and detailing differ between lines even in the same finish. Third, when the exact piece is discontinued, buy from remaining new-in-box stock rather than aftermarket lookalikes; start at the Discontinued Kohler collection or the Model Number Index.
