Where to Put Grab Bars in a Shower: The Three-Bar Layout

A shower needs three grab bars, and each one protects a different movement. A vertical bar at the entry for stepping over the threshold, a horizontal bar on the long wall at 33 to 36 inches for moving and standing, and a bar on the control wall so you can reach the valve without letting go. Fit one bar and it should be the entry bar, because that is where most falls happen.

The three positions

1. The entry bar, vertical

Mounted on the wall beside the shower opening, on the outside or just inside, running vertically. This is the bar somebody holds while lifting a foot over a threshold or a tub wall, which is the single most unstable moment in the whole sequence.

Vertical rather than horizontal, because the hand slides up and down the bar as the body rises and lowers. A horizontal bar at the entry only gives you one useful height.

A 16 or 24 inch bar suits this position. If you fit only one bar in the whole shower, fit this one.

2. The long wall bar, horizontal

On the longest clear wall, at 33 to 36 inches, running as much of the wall as the framing allows. This is the travel rail: it supports somebody moving from the entry to the seat or to the valve, and it is what a hand reaches for if a foot slips.

A 36 inch bar is the target here. Where the studs will not take one, two shorter bars end to end are better than one bar badly fixed.

3. The control wall bar

On the wall containing the valve, so the user can hold on with one hand while adjusting temperature with the other. Reaching for a control with both feet planted and nothing to hold is a common fall.

This wall is usually the short one, and often has the valve and a shower arm competing for space, so a 16 or 24 inch bar is typical. Mount it below the valve rather than above, so the hand is at a natural height while the other arm reaches up.

Where not to put them

Not on the wall behind the shower head if that means reaching through the spray to use it. A bar you avoid because it is cold and wet is not doing its job.

Not diagonally. Angled bars appear in a lot of photographs and they are the weakest of the arrangements, because the hand slides along the bar under load instead of stopping. Vertical or horizontal.

Not where a shower door track or a frame interferes. Check the door's swing and the track position before you mark anything. This is the most common reason a well-planned layout has to move on the day.

Not relying on the soap dish or the towel bar. Neither is built to take a person's weight, and both are common causes of injury in exactly this situation.

Marking the positions before anyone drills

Do this with the person who will use the shower, standing in it, dry, wearing what they normally wear.

Ask them to go through the sequence: step in, turn, reach for the valve, wash, turn, step out. At each point where they reach for something, or where their balance visibly shifts, put a piece of masking tape on the wall where their hand landed. Not where you think it should go. Where it actually went.

You will usually find two things. The entry reach is lower than the standard height, because people grab as they are already dropping their weight onto the leading foot. And there is often a fourth position nobody planned, typically on the wall opposite the valve, where the person turns.

Then reconcile the tape marks with the framing and the door track, and adjust. Where the ideal position and the available fixing disagree, the fixing wins, because a bar in a slightly imperfect place that holds is worth more than a bar in the perfect place that does not.

Fitting the layout to the person

The heights above are for a standing adult of average height. Where the shower is used by a specific person with specific difficulties, watch them use it before you decide, or better, ask an occupational therapist to.

Two adjustments come up often. Somebody who sits to shower needs the long-wall bar positioned relative to the seat rather than to the floor, and usually needs it lower. Somebody who is very tall or very short will want the whole set moved a couple of inches to suit their reach.
